Marshall Middle School is located in East Lynn and serves nearly 975 students in grades 6 through 8. The building, originally named Eastern Junior High School, was built in 1927. The school boasts many successful graduates, including Dr. Catherine Latham, the current superintendent of schools for the city of Lynn. In 1994 the school was renamed in honor of Justice Thurgood Marshall, the first African American to be appointed to the US Supreme Court.
We proudly follow a middle school philosophy, focusing on both academics as well as the social/emotional development of our students. The students are placed in home rooms that are grouped into clusters. Each cluster has a math, science, English and social studies teacher assigned to it. In addition to the 4 major classes, each student is assigned a 5th major class (reading/foreign language/ Title 1 Math) and a unified arts (enrichment) class. We have an active advisory program that focuses on building friendships and character.
All classes follow the Lynn public schools curriculum. Students in all three grades are required to take the state standardized tests (MCAS) in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. Students in grade 8 also take the MCAS science exam. These important exams begin in March. We believe that thorough preparation of our students leads to success in these exams, as well as solid preparation for success in high school and beyond.
We have been the beneficiary of several school-community partnerships. We have a strong working relationship with North Shore Community College, including the Educational Talent Search program, Project YES, and the College for Every Student (CFES) program. Lynn Community Health Center operates a full service clinic in our basement, which brings medical, dental and counseling services to many of our students and their families. Jim Kerrigan and the Lynn Summit have worked with us to develop a speaker series as part of our student advisory program. Lynn English High School has a mentor program that helps our 8th graders to begin to make the transition to high school.
We are constantly focusing on the positive impact of our students. This past year we started a new program entitled "Student Leaders". Students in grades 7 and 8 are selected for participation, based on their character and work ethic. These role model students are given opportunities to lead their peers and to participate in various community service activities throughout the school year.
This website is part of our effort to keep open the communication between the school and our parents. This partnership is what will continue to allow the school to improve. Thank you for your continued support...and please enjoy browsing our website!
Keep Smiling!
